Psg 55 Ramulus nematodes
Caresheet
Country of origin: Malaysia
Food: Bramble, raspberry, oak, rose,...
Temperature: Roomtemperature is perfect for this species.
Humidity: For the small nymphs, a higher humidity is necessary. I would recommend spraying the cage every two days. The adult animals need a large terrarium with enough ventilation. They generally don't need extra humidity, only for their difficult moults the RH needs to be a bit higher.
Equipment: A cage of at least 60 cm high is recommended, with a width and a dept of around 40 cm. The length of this species, together with their long, thin legs makes the moults more difficult. They also throw their leggs off pretty easily. So it's best to keep the cage quite empty, with a few long branches in the centre. Make sure that most of the leafs are in the top off the cage. When this is the case, the animals will mostly be where the chancest are highest for a succesful moult. I try to keep about 3-4 adult couples together, so that they don't disturb each other that often.
Sex determination: the males are even thinner and more fragile than the females. They are about 10 cm long if you don't count the leggs. Their legs are black and in most cultures their body is blue. There is a red colour variation of the males as well, but I've never seen them in culture. The females are green of brown, with two 'ears' on their head. Without the legs they are about 15 cm long.
Breeding: the eggs in my culture were always produced sexually. I don't know if parthenogenesis is possible as well.
Incubation period: after 4-5 months the eggs hatch. Don't keep too many, because the hatching rate is pretty high.
Lifespan (nymph): The nymphs are adult after ± 3 months.
breeding speed: Almost all the eggs hatch and most of the nymphs become adult. The span between egg and adult is about 3/4th of a year.
Special behaviour: By day the animals are quiet, and they stretch their front legs so that they look more like a branch. By twilight, they start to walk around. This species is not easy to handle, since they are so thin and throw their legs of very easily.
special (outer) characteristics: Females have little 'ears' on their head, males are also found in red.
