Psg 329 Aretaon sp Palawan
Caresheet
Country of origin: Philipines.
Food: The food I give them is bramble. You could also give them oak, raspberry, pyracantha, rose,.... Just like the other aretaon species they will probably eat that to.
Temperature: The best temperature for this species is the room temperature (16-20 c°)
Humidity: This species likes humidity (70-80%). You can spray the food plants and the terrarium every evening.
Equipement:a standard terrarium (3x the length of the stick insect for the height and two times the length for the wide and dept of the terrarium) : 30 cm in height and about 20 cm in dept and width will do fine for 2-3 couples. You can put paper towels or vermiculite on the floor of the terrarium. You also have to put a small container in the terrarium with some vermiculite or earth so the females can lay their eggs in it. Also make sure that the animals can hide during the day by using bark or something similar. When you choose for vermiculite on the floor, but you don't want that the animals lay their eggs there, make sure that the layer isn't more than 1 cm high.
Sex determination: you can easily distinguish male and female animals, because the female nymphs have already a small ovipositor and the males a yellow line in their neck. The adult males are about 5-6 cm long and the females 8 cm.
Breeding: sexually.
Incubation period:3-5 months. Keep the eggs humid, but watch out for mold! You can lay the eggs on paper towel or on vermiculite, or you could just let the nymphs hatch in the terrarium by keeping the eggs in that small container.
Lifespan (nymph):it takes the animals 4-6 months to become adult. .
Lifespan (adult): the females can lay eggs for more than a half year . It's a really strong species and some of my adult animals lived for almost a year.
breeding speed: this species grows fast and lays a lot of eggs.
Special behaviour: the animals (especially the males) will move a lot when you grab them. But afther a while they will calm down. During the day, the animals will hide and when it becomes dark, they will slowly start to walk around.
special (outer) characteristics: the males are beautiful coloured with orange and yellow stripes. The females are brown/green and very good camouflaged.
